Ovatum refers to its oval shaped leaves. Typically thought of as a woodland plant it performs equally well in full sun. Leaves small alternate oval to lanceolate 4 cm long toothed leathery glossy dark green generally closely spaced along reddish stems. The evergreen huckleberry is found in clearings and on the margins of evergreen forests from the western slopes of the cascades to the pacific ocean.

Mature plants in shaded locations can spread 10 wide especially if the site is moist. Glossy green leathery evergreen leaves are ovate with pointed tips and finely serrated margins. An upright evergreen broad leaved shrub that typically grows 2 3 tall in the sun but up to 10 in height if grown in full shade. Leaves are splotched with reddish purple when in full sun.

The fruit is so small that it takes a good sized portion to make jam jelly or syrup but it is worth the effort for their sweet fresh flavor. Vaccinium ovatum is one of the most versatile and underused native plants of the pacific northwest. Flowers are in clusters of 3 10 emerging from leaf axils urn shaped corolla is whitish pink to pink. Does not transplant well but can be grown easily from smaller potted stock.
